Rod Davis – a brief encounter

Born, July 23 1943 in a little village in Devon, so I have just got my pension.

Was going to be an engineer, following Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s audacious creativity, but woke up to reality when I realised my maths were on the shaky side and all my bridges would probably fall down, so became a graphic designer instead.

Ran my own design and marketing company for 25 years until I couldn’t stand it any more, when I gave it all up and have worked for charities ever since. Notably, Charity Bank which I helped to launch in 2001. I still act for them as communications advisor.

Have had a family home here in Jávea for 40 years, first with my parents who got fed up with English weather and decided to find the most perfect place to live. Dad found Montgó and built a house high up, so beginning the ruin of the wonderful hillside. But I like it, and in my semi-retirement 15 years ago I came to live in it, but commuted monthly to the UK until the internet developed so much that I could dispense with the plane trips. So now I live here permanently, and very happily ever since I met Maria Luisa 4 years ago. Divorced (21 years ago) with 2 very grown-up kids.

Had my first painting exhibition when I was 16, and now have re-found the joy of the canvas and am starting my long-awaited second career as a struggling artist. Other interests – food and cooking, gardens and gardening, wine and the odd glass or two, boats and sailing, and travelling as far and as often as my pocket will allow me.
