A reading and talk by Penelope Shuttle. Stanza Alacant Invites you to a reading and talk by the distinguished poet and novelist Penelope Shuttle, at 6-30 Friday 3 October. Entrance is FREE. Christopher North will be chairing at La Seu Universitaria de la Marina in Benissa, C/Purissima 57-59 (beside the Ayuntamiento), which is a marvellous venue. | Tuesday 7 October | Claude Morel A talk by the author: The Lower East Side Kid that Made it Good Claude Morell was born in Orba, Alicante in 1928, and went to the U.S. when he was 11 months old and lived his first 30 years on the Lower East Side of Manhattan between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. Claude will introduce you to his neighborhood’s people, apartments and storefront businesses during the 1930’s and 40’s. In addition, he will touch on the lives of some shady characters as well as some prominent figures, such as Jimmy Durante and Al Smith, who lived on the Lower East Side. He describes interesting experiences in the military, hitch-hiking to Mexico, traveling through Europe and his marriage to a girl from Orba. |
| Tuesday 21 October | Graham Greene A selection of books by members English novelist, short-story writer, playwright and journalist who needs no introduction, as he is one of the most widely read novelists of the 20th-century and a superb storyteller. Influenced both by his Catholic and political influences, adventure and suspense are constant elements in his novels and many of his books have been made into successful films. Although Greene was a candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature several times, he never received the award. Greene suffered from bipolar disorder,which had a profound effect on his writing, and drove him to excess in his personal life. In a letter to his wife Vivien he told her that he had "a character profoundly antagonistic to ordinary domestic life", and that "unfortunately, the disease is also one's material". |
| Tuesday 4 November | Keith Geddes Introducing his first novel When Keith retired to Spain he decided to put some of his amusing experiences on paper and began to construct his first, somewhat autobiographical novel called "Please Sir, there's a snake in the art room" based on Headmastering in London and Kenya. |

| Tuesday 2 December | An evening with Thomas Hardy To celebrate his centenary. Discussion, followed by showing of TV programme about Hardy. Discussion facilitated by short presentations about different aspects of Hardy. |
| Monday 15 December | Christmas party An annual event held at a suitable local restaurant , where we discuss the world, the family, the coming festivities - and share a bit of literature over a little wine! |
